Aims

The aim of the module is to enable to students to relate management to the development of strategy and structure aligned to the environment and to serve organizational performance. Participants will learn about the way in which management thinking has evolved over the last 100 years. Students will gain knowledge of the key functions and activities associated with the practice of modern management in relation to strategy, organization and performance. Students will learn about the way in which context shapes the nature of managerial practices. Students will learn the value of understanding the guiding principles of good managerial practice at a variety of organizational levels.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Explain how the nature of managerial practices has changed during the course of the 20th century and early 21st century;

(LO2) Understand the key theories associated the practice of management;

(LO3) Be able to analysis organizational activities in terms of their current managerial practices;

(LO4) Understand contemporary management practices in the context of changing organizational forms and structures;

(LO5) Understand contemporary managerial problems related to diversity, ethics/CSR and concerns for degradation of the environment.

Description: Six x Two Hour seminars – students will work in sub-groups of 5 to examine management practises in a case study organization (each tutorial will focus on a different aspect of management).
