Aims

The aim of this module is to introduce the student to some of the tools and constraints associated with managing both small and large project contracts, including procurement approaches. The aim of this module is to demonstrate how project managers handle contracts and coordinate the procurement process. Specific topics include the examination of procurement strategies and roles including; long term contracts, short term contracts responsiveness and supplier-client relationships etc. The module will also identify issues relating to contracts, including tendering, bidding and order management processes, as well as the legal and commercial implications. Tools and techniques will be presented within each topic covered. The aims are that the student will: On completion of the module a student is expected to understand A1. Understand the nature and importance of 'contracts' within the project management projects. A2. Understand the principles and roles of procurement. A3. Under stand the legal and commercial factors in projects. A4. Understand and apply a range of tools and techniques relevant to managing the procurement process.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) At the end of this course students will have gained an understanding of the issues involved and will be able to: O1. Be able to define the criteria for understanding project contracts O2. Be able to discuss the fundamental concepts of procurement practices. O3. Be able to identify the legal and contractual obligations O4. 1 To manage costs, increase quality and reduce risk, procurement has become a key part of the planning and coordinating process across projects. The aim of the module is to provide students with a thorough grounding in managing project contracts and procurement. Specific topics covered in the Contracts section of the module include: Week 1: Introduction to Contracts and Procurement Contracts and Procurement Management supporting organizational competitive performance Cost of Managing a Project Marketing & Sales Legal Awareness Week 2: Procurement Strategies The procurement process Project procurement methods Procurement systems Week3: Procurement Management (1) Development of a Procurement management plan Requirements and specifications Bids and proposals: Request seller responses to solicit information, quotations, bids, offers or proposals from potential sellers Supplier and provider selection: This is the process of selecting selllers by reviewing offers, choosing from th e candidate sellers, and negotiating a written contract with the sellers. Plan contracting to determine and document the requirements for the products, services or results to be obtained and to identify the potential sellers.
