Aims

Manage the academic requirements of online learning successfully;

Understand and have a practical appreciation of contemporary management challenges;

Understand the means by which benchmarking and comparative performance assessment can be undertaken;

Have a practical understanding of the importance of teamwork and communication;

Appreciate the need for competence in operations management and be aware of its impact on business performance; Be more accomplished autonomous learners and be able to better manage their own learning experiences.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Interpret business health and performance using a range of financial and non-financial measures;

(LO2) Analyse how effective operations performance can support and deliver business success;

(LO3) Analyse and pinpoint success factors within chosen market sectors;

(LO4) Extract information from financial statements;

(LO5) Demonstrate their ability to work within and make an active contribution to work teams;

(LO6) Have the research skills and appreciation of both strategic and functional management practice in order to be able to plan and undertake work at a postgraduate level within a Management discipline;

(LO7) Participate in and contribute to an academic community through online Discussion;

(LO8) Apply conventions of a writing style and academic integrity to academic writing;

(LO9) Analyse and evaluate scholarly resources and writing for logic and supporting evidence.

(S1) Communication Skills: Students will have opportunities to develop written communication skills through group discussions and assignments;

(S2) Problem Solving and Decision Making: Students will be challenged to think critically about organisational issues and dilemmas. They will do this by gathering and synthesising information, analysing alternative perspectives and options and presenting a considered opinion or programme of action in their course assessment;

(S3) Numeracy Skills: Students will learn quantitative techniques. Students will have the opportunity to analyse and use financial and statistical data to support business decisions;

(S4) Information and Communication Technology Skills: Students will have opportunities to improve their ICT skills. Students will demonstrate skills in the use of software applications including word processing, visual presentations, data bases, spreadsheets and using the internet for information searches in the course;

(S5) Group Working Skills: Some work will require students to work in groups and manage the interaction and relationships with other group members. In doing so, they will gain experience in negotiation, persuasion, influencing and managing conflict;

(S6) Personal Effectiveness: Students will be encouraged to think critically about theory and practice and to challenge and critique assumptions about the management of people and organisations. In doing so they will be able to recognise and consider issues such as ethical dilemmas, corporate social responsibility, organisational values, leadership approaches and styles;

(S7) Time management. This involves planning scheduled work and meeting assessment deadlines. This will be evident in the students’ independent management of their assignments and coursework and by meeting coursework deadlines.

Introduction to Online Learning: Participating in the global classroom; Outlining arguments for scholarly discourse; Recognize the academic skills necessart to function as a successful knowledge-practitioner; Recognize orginiality and plagiarism through a software tool Research peer-reviwed journals in the online library.

Introduction to Operations Management: Evaluate the role of operations management in an organisation; Introduction to Supply Chain Management.

Evaluate the role of supply chain management in an organisation.   The Role of the Operations Manager: Evaluate operations and supply chain management roles in an organisation.

Management Challenges in a Global Environment: Evaluate management challenges in a global environment.

The Role of Marketing in an Organisation: Evaluate the role and importance of marketing in an organisation; Analyse the importance of using an analysis tool for marketing; Evaluate an organisation’s approach to marketing.

Measuring the Performance of an Organisation: Distinguish between financial and non-financial types of performance measures; Analyse the reasons for adopting a balanced approach for measuring the performance of an organisation; Evaluate key performance metrics.
