Aims

To identify the main phases in a project’s life cycle and the role/requirements of project management and the project manager in those phases;

To explore the relationship of project management to general/line management and management theory related to leadership, motivation, team working and organisational structures etc;

To introduce current and recent research in the field of project management;

To introduce the process of risk management in a project context.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Assess the role of project management and the project manager in the life of a project;

(LO2) Critically evaluate theoretical and practical perspectives to project management;

(LO3) Compare and contrast current and potential future developments in project management;

(LO4) Apply key aims, objectives, phases, milestones etc. to the life of a project in a chosen area of application;

(LO5) Apply planning and monitoring techniques to a chosen project application area;

(LO6) Apply risk management processes to a chosen project application area.

(S1) Communication Skills: Students will have opportunities to develop written and oral communication skills through group discussions, in-class presentations and coursework. This will be assessed by written assignments, reports the dissertation and short individual and group presentations;

(S2) Problem Solving and Decision Making: Students will be challenged to think critically about organisational issues and dilemmas. They will do this by gathering and synthesising information, analysing alternative perspectives and options and presenting a considered opinion or course of action in their course assessment;

(S3) Information and Communication Technology Skills: Students will have opportunities to improve their ICT skills. Students will demonstrate skills in the use of software applications including word processing, visual presentations, data bases, econometric packages, spreadsheets and using the internet for information searches in the course of researching and presenting coursework;

(S4) Personal Effectiveness: This applies to all modules where students will be encouraged to think critically about theory and practice and to challenge and critique assumptions about management, economic and financial theory;

(S5) Time management. This applies to all modules of the programme and is relevant for planning scheduled work and meeting assessment deadlines. This will be evident in the students’ independent management of their assignments and coursework and by meeting coursework deadlines.

Syllabus

 

What is Project Management? The concept of PM compared and contrasted to line / general project management (PM);

What is a project? The project life cycle – initiation, implementation & termination;

The project manager: skills, knowledge, background & training;

Project organisations: organisational structures – matrix, project etc;

Project feasibility etc. Selecting between competing projects;

Project planning: cost planning – estimating, establishing budgets etc;

Risk management: the risk management phases – identification, analysis & response;

Procurement: external service/product requirements – consultants, contractors etc;

Monitoring & control: monitoring, evaluating and predicting time and cost performance;

Termination: closure and reporting / documenting procedures.
