Aims

The aim of the module is to provide a greater awareness of the capability of Excel in the financial environment.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - Lecture
Description: Two hour lecture in a PC Suite
Attendance Recorded: Yes
Notes: The lectures will be interactive sessions involving the use of a PC during the class. Each week students will be provided with a practical problem taken from the course text.
Unscheduled Directed Student Hours (time spent away from the timetabled sessions but directed by the teaching staff): 24

Self-Directed Learning Description: Students will use the self-directed learning hours to consolidate knowledge.


Syllabus

 

An introduction to the Excel environment and Excel functions for dealing with textual data;

Statistical analysis using Excel;

Using Excel to model asset returns, portfolio analysis and optimisation;

Estimating the CAPM using Excel;

The fundamentals of matrix algebra using Excel;

The fundamentals of bond pricing using Excel;

Investment appraisal using Excel;

Option pricing using Excel and an introduction to VBA;

Determination of the optimal hedge ratio;

Forecasting sales using Excel.
