Aims

Support the development of students’ analysis and HR decision making skills.

For the students, to demonstrate the ability to research, analyse and present information coherently. This is in relation to two main components, namely:

Professional and personal development/analysis of 'self’ as a critically reflective learner;

Academic (linked to professional) transition over the year and also key issues in HR within the strategic business world/overview of how their knowledge and views have changed during two semesters.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Lectures x 64 hours
Four days (9am to 5pm) in both semesters 1 and 2, so 8 days in total over the two semesters (64 actual lecture hours). Two lectures on each day.

Lectures will broadly focus on:

The importance of critical reflection within the field of HR;
Executive professional report writing and academic learning within the field of HR;
Professional and personal development. Exploration of being a professional HR specialist, using CIPD literature;
The integration of HR theory and practice;
Focus on Continuing Professional Development (CPD), linked to HRD literature;
External speakers will provide students with varied practitioner perspectives from the worlds of both HRM and HRD;
Case studies will be used to explore HR in the workplace.

Online discussions x 60 hours
A question will be posted weekly (weeks 3 to 9 inclusive in semesters one and two) – 14 questions for both academic individual/professional development. The Mo dule Leaders will add value to the discussion board weekly, thus monitoring overall activity and ensuring that the students are adhering to the tasks. Monitoring of some diary entries will occur to ensure that the brief is being adhered to.

Self-directed learning x 176 hours
Individual work - diary entry weekly in weeks 3 to 9 inclusive in Semesters one and two. Synopsis report writing.


Syllabus

 

The syllabus will focus on a series of questions which will be linked to the content of the other core taught modules during semesters one and two. Students will learn the key skill of critically reflective writing in academic, professional and personal contexts. Furthermore, there will be a clear aim of linking academic and professional / personal learning in order to enhance the skills and knowledge of the students.
