Aims

Following module ARCH401 and the development of critical thinking on a given urban setting, the aim of this module is to develop an urban strategy and a larger scale proposition.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Students will be able to articulate a critical response to urban analysis.

(LO2) Students will be able to manipulate information towards formulation of urban strategy.

(LO3) Students will be able to influence the design and development of cities, past and present on the contemporary built environment.

(LO4) Students will be able to evaluate the impact of buildings on the environment, and the precepts of sustainable design.

(S1) Students will improve their of own learning/ performance through reflective practice.

(S2) Students will improve time and project management - personal organisation.

(S3) Students will improve critical reading.

(S4) Students will improve their own research skills.

(S5) Students will improve their own initiative.

(S6) Students will improve their own creative thinking and problem solving.


Syllabus

 

The project will investigate how theories, practices and technologies influence the analysis and design of contemporary cities. Special emphasis will be given to process: students will be encouraged to experiment with mixed techniques and technologies, and to test, develop, and transform their ideas through their representation and verbal articulation. Studio work will be accompanied by lectures by staff and invited speakers.

Teaching Method 1 - Lectures/ Seminars
Description: Studio work will be supported by lectures and seminars by staff and invited speakers

Teaching Method 2 - Tutorial
Description: Group and individual studio-based tutorial on a weekly basis (one day per week)
Length of tutorials varies depending on the number of students/groups (from 30 to 60 minutes per group)

Teaching Method 3 - Reviews
Description: Studio work will be examined and discussed in interim and final reviews with the contribution of other members of staff and guest reviewers as appropriate

Environmental Design Drop-in sessions: 3 x 2 hour sessions

All teaching (tutorials, lectures, and reviews) will be based on a blended model of learning (a combination of online and face-to-face teaching) that provides the best student experience.
