Aims

The module is aiming to equip students with the tools to independently analyse and understand the formal arrangements and qualities of buildings, with a view to also enhance students' design abilities.

The module seeks to encourage students to assess the appropriateness of means applied to different building tasks, from small shelters to large infrastructural buildings like airports.

Syllabus

 

Students will be shown a series of buildings of varying sizes (XS, S, M, L) and in the lectures these buildings will be presented by looking at and analysing their plans, sections, elevations, context, internal and external space, type, circulation and materiality. Furthermore issues of private and public space, private and public buildings, ensembles, composition, symmetry / asymmetry, the repetition of elements and spaces, and fronts and backs, will be discussed.

The items on the reading list will be available through the library (hard copy and e-journal) and students are expected to study the texts, as they are essential for the understanding of the module content.

The lecture slides will be made available through Canvas and will form part of the learning resources. Students should, at the end of the module, have a 'visual' library of approximately 30 different buildings at their disposal, covering a range of sizes, programmes and architectural types. Indep endent reading on the buildings discussed is recommended. If there is no material available, copies of articles will be made available on Canvas.
