Personal Statement

After graduating from the University of Glasgow in 2000, Jo worked in equine first opinion practice for 7 years, with additional time spent working in a large equine referral hospital in Sweden and as a volunteer veterinary surgeon in The Gambia for the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust. ‌In 2010, she obtained the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (Equine Medicine – Internal) and completed her PhD in equine geriatric health and welfare at the University of Liverpool in 2011.

In October 2010, Jo joined the Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance group at the Animal Health Trust where her role involved disease surveillance and leading a nationwide vaccine trial for Equine Grass Sickness. ‌In January 2017, she returned to Leahurst, spending 5 years working in our first opinion equine practice, teaching veterinary undergraduate students. Her current role is split between veterinary education and research, and she is co-ordinator of three veterinary postgraduate modules for the Certificate of Advanced Veterinary Practice, as well as Programme Director for our Postgraduate Diploma and Master's in Veterinary Professional Studies programmes. Jo's main research interests are equine epidemiology and internal medicine, particularly geriatric medicine, endocrine disorders, endocrinopathic laminitis and lower respiratory tract disease. Jo is a member of the Equine Veterinary Journal Study Design and Data Analysis Board and Associate Editor for Veterinary Evidence.
