Join IVES researchers for a Pint of Science
Academics from the Institute of Infection, Veterinary and Ecological Sciences are set to showcase their research next month as part of the world's largest festival of public science talks.
More than 35 staff and students from across the University will deliver a unique line up of talks, demonstrations, and live experiments at this year’s Pint of Science festival.
Pint of Science runs from 22-24 May at venues including Leaf, Tempest, The Philharmonic Dining Rooms and The Shipping Forecast, with four members of IVES on the bill:
- Dr Bhagteshwar Singh invites us to join him on his journey to find better methods of diagnosis and treatment in ‘Bugs in the Brain: How to Find Them and Treat Them’ on 23 May as part of the Pick ‘n’ Mix event.
- Dr Helen Clough draws on examples from everyday life to help us make sense of the numbers and better understand risk in ‘What’s in a Number? Making Sense of Risk’ on 24 May as part of the Brains on Booze, Stats News and Dementia Care Views event.
- Dr Libby Duignan introduces us to phages and how they can help us beat infections in ‘Antibiotic Resistance; Will I Die from a UTI or is there an Alternative to Antibiotics?’ on 22 May as part of the Defeating Disease: The Next Generation event.
- Dr John Tullock unpicks the issue of dog attacks and current research into how to prevent them in ‘Dogs of the North: Does Liverpool have a Dog Bite Problem?’ as part of the Understanding Us event.
Laura Winters, Public Engagement Officer, Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, said: “This will be Liverpool’s largest Pint of Science festival to date, and we’re delighted to be part of this international event. Not only are we having fun and inviting people to learn something new, we are also shining a spotlight on the incredible research happening right here in Liverpool. Pint of Science gives researchers the opportunity to share their stories, and audiences an opportunity to ask questions about science to those directly behind it.”
Alongside the main talks, this year audiences can go head-to-head in the largest-ever multi-city pub quiz. Teams in each venue will compete against others across the city and the rest of the UK as they tackle a series of science-themed questions to prove which city has the strongest trivia knowledge. Also, not to be missed, the daring Shots of Science speakers will compete in a series of rapid-fire talks with the winner voted for by the public.
Pint of Science was founded in 2013 and this year marks the festival’s 10th anniversary.
