Dr Samantha Caslin BA, MA, PhD

Senior Lecturer in History History

Teaching

I specialise in teaching histories of gender and sexuality. I have written and I deliver the award-winning module 'Beyond Binaries: A Modern (British) History of Gender and Sexuality.' The module introduces students to a wide range of historiographical and theoretical approaches to gender and sexuality. Focusing on the later-nineteenth and twentieth centuries, 'Beyond Binaries' takes account of trajectories in feminist thought, postcolonial work and queer theory, and it uses a variety of case studies to unpack and challenge the dominance of heteronormative approaches to the past.

I also deliver a special subject on sex, gender and the law, which enables third-year students to delve deeply into the ways gender and sexualities have been historically regulated and policed. Students who take this module typically go on to produce history dissertations on a variety of topics related to the modern history of gender and sexuality.
