This autumn sees the publication of The Prelate in England and Europe, 1300-1560, edited by Dr Martin Heale.
This volume grew out of a conference held in Liverpool in September 2011, bringing together a number of the leading authorities on the medieval and sixteenth-century church.
High ecclesiastical office in the middle ages inevitably brought power, wealth and patronage. The essays in this volume examine how late medieval and Renaissance prelates – cardinals, bishops and abbots – deployed the income and influence of their offices, how they understood their role, and how they were viewed by others. This was an era in which the concept and role of the prelate, as an emblem a powerful and wealthy church, was increasingly contested: a theme investigated in Dr Heale’s second- and third-year undergraduate modules on ‘Church and Society in Late Medieval and Reformation England’ and ‘The Henrician Reformation’.
