The School of Histories, Languages and Cultures are pleased to announce that they are offering two Scholarships to Black British students applying for the MA in International Slavery Studies beginning in September 2022. The scholarship will cover the full cost of tuition fees and a £10,000 bursary each.

The International Slavery Studies MA is one of the few programmes in the world that allows students to study slavery and unfree labour in a wide variety of both past and present contexts. MA students can choose their specialisation by studying one of two pathways: trans-Atlantic slavery or modern slavery and unfree labour.

The two pathways offer MA students a variety of module options on the course. Dr Peter Olayiwola, Lecturer in Politics of Immigration, Anti-trafficking and Modern Slavery states that within the Modern Slavery module on the MA students will:

…study the lives of individuals that are often considered victims of economic exploitation in various contexts…[and]…how and why certain forms of exploitation get recognised more than others.

Students on the MA will also have the opportunity to gain valuable experience by working with MA partner: the International Slavery Museum. By working with the Museum’s staff, MA students will focus on the commemoration and memorialisation of slavery.

Full details, including eligibility criteria for the scholarships and application details can be found at: MA International Slavery Studies Scholarships 2022.

The deadline for the scholarships is 30 June 2022.
