Quality evaluation has been used internationally as a mainstream approach to demonstrate that universities provide a quality education to the public. In this lecture, Professor Ming Cheng will explore the pros and cons of evaluating quality for management purposes in higher education.
Based on five completed research projects, which explore academics’ and students’ experiences and perspectives of quality and quality evaluation, Professor Cheng will propose that developing the intrinsic values of teaching and learning held by academics and students is key to achieving quality education. She will critically review the four most frequently used terms related to current quality evaluation: fitness for purpose, value for money, student satisfaction and students as customers. She will conclude with suggestions that it is time for the higher education sector to invest in human factors, improve academics’ subject professionalism and increase students’ commitment to learning.
Refreshments will be available from 12.15pm and the seminar will start at 12.30pm. There will be time for discussion after the seminar for those who are able to stay.
