    Research Overview

My doctoral dissertation (CEU, 2013) explored ethnographically the development of an alternative higher education institution in a socialist country: the Bolivarian University of Venezuela. In continuity with this study, I have worked as a Visegrad fellow at Open Society Archives on Cold War exchange in higher education. I am also now a PI on an University of Liverpool ODA Seed Fund and SSRC Covid Rapid Response/Wenner Gren Global Initiative research project connecting migration and social mobility and perceptions of ‘essential work’ of university-educated Venezuelan migrants in Argentina (Co-I Jesica Pla, IIGG/UBA).

Before joining the University of Liverpool, I was a postdoctoral fellow within an ESRC/ Newton/ NRF-sponsored interdisciplinary project The Unbundled University that studied the impact of digital technologies of the marketization of universities and unbundling of teaching and learning on universities, and the automation and casualisation of academic labour in South Africa and the UK. I also worked as an IRC postdoctoral research fellow at University College Dublin, on the project Equality of Learning, Working and Caring, exploring the rise of precarity and inequality in Irish higher education after the 2008 crisis.
