North West Medieval Studies

The North West Medieval Studies Network was created in 2021 by Dr Ingrid Rembold (Manchester) out of the longstanding M6 Seminar and Reading Group. It aims to provide an inclusive platform for interdisciplinary and cross-institutional collaboration which connects researchers of all stages, from MA students to emeriti, across the North West.

PGR Symposium

The North West Medieval Studies PGR Symposium will take place on 4th August 2026 at Chetham's Library in Manchester. If you are interested in presenting, please send a title, 150 word abstract and bio to nwmsreading@gmail.com by 17 July.

This year's Symposium is all about the rabbit holes. Bring the weird tangents, abandoned footnotes and fascinating distractions that were outside the scope of your paper, the stuff your supervisor told you to cut but you couldn't stop thinking about. We are open to any postgraduate student or ECR working on any topic whether that be medieval or medievalism and papers may come from any disciplinary background, whether that be history, literature, archaeology or any other.

Weekly Seminars

The North West Medieval Studies Seminar meets on Fridays 12.00-12.50, via Teams. This informal lunchtime seminar features 'work in progress' talks from local and external speakers on all aspects of medieval studies - from neumes to numismatics, wergilds to wapentakes, manuscripts to manorialism, semantics to stained glass, and more.

Reading Group

The North West Medieval Studies Reading Group is a friendly and informal group of PGRs and ECRs who meet online every other week during the semester. The group is open to presentations from postgraduate students and ECRs working on any topic related to the medieval (and early-modern) period or medievalism. Sessions may be based on primary or secondary sources, or work-in-progress such as a chapter, article or conference paper draft. The organisers can be contacted via nwmsreading@gmail.com
