The UK's nuclear energy future [PDF 0.5MB]

As the UK grapples with an energy supply crisis that has seen gas and electricity prices rocket over recent months, debate has turned to how more domestic energy capacity can be developed. The UK government has suggested it could develop up to eight more nuclear reactors, with the aim for nuclear energy to deliver around 25% of the UK’s electricity demand. However, construction of new nuclear energy plants is slow and unlikely to be delivered in sufficient time to assist with the UK’s 2050 Net Zero target. This briefing outlines the potential of an innovative solution - iMAGINE – which uses spent nuclear waste fuel to generate energy. The technology is a potential gamechanger for the UK’s energy supply, offering the possibility not only of secure electricity supply but also reducing nuclear waste and contributing to the transition to Net Zero.
