Dr Newsham leads the strategic development of the undergraduate orthoptic degree programme and postgraduate/CPD portfolio. His research interests are centred on paediatric ocular motility and visual function, particularly in the areas of amblyopia, suppression, diplopia and oculomotor control. He is a member of the Senior Management Team in the School of Health Sciences and Lead for Research & Scholarship.
Beyond the university he represents the UK & Ireland on the International Orthoptic Association where he is the Lead for Education and Research. Other roles include: Health & Care Professions Council Partner (Panel Member), represents the UK & Ireland on the European Orthoptic Education Committee, Chair of the Local Organising Committee for the quadrennial International Orthoptic Congress 2020, Member of the Education Committee of the British and Irish Orthoptic Society, Editor of the British and Irish Orthoptic Journal (2012-16) and Member of the NICE Technology Appraisal Committee (Jan 2009 – Jan 2012) representing Allied Health Professions.
