About the event

Dr Phil Booth (Leverhulme Early Career Fellow, Manchester Metropolitan University): ‘Writing for teaching: reassessing the textual corpus of Riccoldo of Monte Croce (c.1243-1320)’

Dr Chris Cooijmans (British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Liverpool): 'Hostile in Tent: The Logistics of Viking Encampment across Atlantic Europe'

Migration and travel have become questions of particular political and cultural tension in recent years, and they were no less live in the medieval period. From the logistics of Viking encampment to the behaviour of Western pilgrims, in this seminar we will be treated to two fascinating papers which offer insight into the patterns of movement and exchange which characterised the period.

Dr Chris Cooijmans will explore the reach and repercussions of Viking activity across the Frankish realm: how Vikings behaved in new lands when they first arrived remains a live debate within the field, and in his paper ‘Hostile in Tent’ Dr Cooijmans will investigate the nature and implications of Viking behaviour - but also, and importantly, its reception by premodern historians and writers.
