Chulalongkorn University
The University of Liverpool and Chulalongkorn University (Bangkok) have been in partnership for over ten years. This prestigious partnership encompasses student exchange, research collaboration and a Dual PhD Programme.
Chulalongkorn University, Thailand’s oldest University founded in 1917, has a student population of approximately 30,000. The University focuses itself on three social development core principles: preparing future leaders, developing impactful research and innovations, and advocating social sustainability.
The partnership focuses on fostering wide-reaching, research-intensive collaboration, with opportunity for extensive engagement at both Universities for academics and students, aligning with Liverpool’s 2031 Global Engagement strategic pillar. Through the dedication of colleagues at both Universities, the partnership continues to go from strength to strength. Most recently the Dual PhD Programme has been expanded to include an additional Faculty at Chulalongkorn University, promoting wider research collaboration across multi-disciplinary teams at both Universities.

Students on the Dual PhD study for 4 years spending a minimum of 12 months at the University of Liverpool. Upon successful completion, students are awarded a PhD from both Universities. Applicants complete required pre-requisite coursework modules and pass examinations at Chulalongkorn University to then be eligible to apply to the Programme. Once these requirements have been met, applicants apply to the University of Liverpool through the standard application process (following interview with prospective supervisors from both Universities).
At the University of Liverpool, students are currently registered under a variety of PhD Programmes within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, in the Insitute of Life Course and Medical Sciences (ILCaMS), the Insitute of Systems, Molecular and Integrative Biology (ISMIB) and the Insitute of Infection, Veterinary and Ecological Sciences (IVES). The Programme is managed by a dedicated Programme Management Team (PMT) who are responsible for ensuring compliance with Programme requirements and enhancing the student experience. Students have a Primary Supervisor based at each University.
PhD projects within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences are delivered across four Institutes:

Examples of projects which are in progress or have been completed include:
- Development of collagen scaffold with gallic acid-assisted crosslinking: potential application for bone tissue engineering
- Rapid and sensitive methods of identification of cancer cells are essential for the early diagnosis of diseases such as cancer, characterisation of the properties of the cancer cells and for monitoring the effectiveness of treatments
- Metabolic regulation of aberrant neutrophil ROS and NET production in systemic lupus erythematosus.
Institute of Systems, Molecular and Integrative Biology
Examples of projects which are in progress or have been completed include:
- Effect of sulfated polysaccharides on shrimp immunity against Vibrio parahaemolyticus and white spot syndrome virus
- To contribute further to the body of knowledge through the investigation of mTORC2 and its substrates through the use of phosphoproteomics
- Functional validation of candidate salt tolerant genes from local Thai rice and involvement of SUMOylation
- Identification of transcription regulation and gene expression relationship in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (cll) based on single-cell data analysis
- Development of screening and identification strategy for profiling haemotoxic proteins in medically important viper snake venoms of Thailand
- Discovery of genes responsible for changes in Rice Starch Properties under drought stress
- Identification of magnaporthe oryzae protein targets using comparative omics and protein modelling techniques
- Stau-2 protein levels in breast cancer detection
- A systems biology approach to identify biomarkers of Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma metastasis.
Institute of Infection, Veterinary and Ecological Sciences
Examples of projects which are in progress or have been completed include:
- CRISPR-gene editing technology to disrupt plasma membrane receptors and intracellular signalling pathways responsible for viral infections into cultured cells
- Genomic and Transcriptomic Signatures of Miltefosine Resistance in Leishmania (Mundinia) martiniquensis
- Profiling the microbiome in hormone dependent and independent breast cancer patients before and after treatment with cannabis oil in Thailand.
