Ashley Pierre

Ashley graduated in 2018 with a degree in Aerospace, Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering. He tells us how study abroad has helped him launch his career with the European Space Agency

"I was fortunate enough to experience the Year in China at XJTLU in the academic year 2016-17. The experience was invaluable and as a result has opened up new opportunities for me, as well as being a catalyst that helped advance my interpersonal skills and confidence.

The opportunity to study abroad is one that I would recommend any student to do, regardless of degree or preconceptions. The experience provides more than just study and credits, it allows you to gain a completely new insight into a different culture and geographical setting, whilst meeting new people and being exposed to new ideas.

Towards the end of my final year I gained a six month internship at the European Space Agency in Germany. The experience I am having here is invaluable and my time spent in China on the year abroad was a big determining factor in me gaining this internship. The European Space Agency is an international organisation and the fact that I showed I had experience studying and living in a foreign environment definitely made my application stronger".
