Mary Ann Hughes, who sadly passed away in 2022, studied at the University of Liverpool in the mid-1960s. Inspired by her travel adventures with her parents and siblings as a little girl, she decided to study Geography and gained her degree in 1967.
Mary went on to study for a PhD, before training as a teacher and dedicating her career to educating the younger generations. Described by her brother David and sister Margaret as a "born communicator who loved children", they reflected on her retirement: "Such was her empathy with her pupils that, when her retirement was announced in assembly, a deputation of them begged her to stay."
Mary's Liverpool Legacy
Mary's care for students continued after she passed, as per her wishes, she left a gift in her Will to support students in need at the University of Liverpool through the Student Fund.
Mary's support has provided vital financial help to students from families with lower-incomes, enabling them to cover the essential costs of student life and gain their degrees at the University, just as she had in 1967.
