Mapping Lineages: Quantifying the Evolution of Maps of the British Isles

Introduction

For centuries, maps of Great Britain have shaped how the nation has seen itself. Using digital technologies this project explores the historical genealogy of British maps. At the heart of the project is the development of new analytical techniques which could fundamentally revise histories of British cartography.

The project will help in understanding how maps changed across seven centuries (1000-1700), contributing to ongoing academic debates on the relationship between maps and map-makers. A key project output is a multimedia resource to bring historic maps of Britain to a wider audience, charting the changing shape of the nation and its peoples.

Mapping Lineages is funded by the Leverhulme Trust (project RPG-2015-274) and this support is acknowledged gratefully.
