SUMMARY:Liverpool Mathematical Society Christmas Lecture – Year 11-13 & Public
DESCRIPTION:The 5th Liverpool Mathematical Society Christmas Lecture features Dr Yolanda Ohene and Dr Colin Wright, delivering two very different and fascinating talks on Friday 11th December, 2pm – 3pm, via Zoom‘Science, Statistics & SARS-CoV-2’ by Dr Yolanda OheneDuring the first lockdown, Yolanda volunteered at a Covid-19 testing centre. Yolanda will be talking about her experience of this in a relevant but fun way, covering the science behind testing for the virus, including exponential models, uncertainties, population and sample sizes.‘Colours can Compute’ by Dr Colin WrightSuppose I give you a network and ask you to colour the nodes according to some incredibly simple rules. Whether that can be done, efficiently, in all possible cases, is an outstanding problem in mathematics, computer science, management, operations research, and more. In this talk, we shall see why, and look at some applications. This year’s free, online Christmas lecture is aimed at students in Year 11 to Year 13, as well as the wider public. Teachers are welcome to stream the lecture for interested groups at school, and only need to book one ticket per Zoom connection. For further information and to register to attend, please visit Eventrbite
