DESCRIPTION:The Getting Word Project“Beyond Labour and Commodity: Descendants and Monticello’s Getting Word Oral History Project”In 1993, Monticello founded the Getting Word African American Oral History Project to learn about North American slavery and its legacies from descendants of people owned by Thomas Jefferson.Getting Word is a growing archive of more than 200 interviews that recognizes the personhood of Monticello’s enslaved families and preserves the stories of their descendants.A panel of descendants of the enslaved and historians will discuss the impact of this project on the interpretation of slavery at Monticello and broader implications for studying labour, slavery, and capitalism.A drinks reception will take place from 5pm before the Keynote and the Keynote will begin at 6pm.This is one of the Keynote events of the 'The 75th Anniversary of Eric Williams’ Capitalism &amp; Slavery' Conference hosted by the Centre for the Study of International Slavery in Liverpool 1-3 November 2019.
