SUMMARY:Our Changing Oceans - a centennial perspective guest lecture by Prof Claire Mahaffey
DESCRIPTION:We would like to invite you to attend the Inaugural Lecture of alumna and Ocean Chair, Professor Claire Mahaffey, to celebrate 100 years of Ocean Studies.Professor Mahaffey will explore the transformations our oceans have sustained over the past century and offer insight into how scientists are trying to better understand the impact of climate change on our oceans.The lecture and Q&amp;A session will take place from 4pm – 5pm in the Leggate Theatre, Victoria Gallery and Museum, which will then be followed by a celebratory drinks reception from 5pm – 7pm.This event launches year-long celebrations with more activities throughout the year to be announced soon. The celebrations will close with a special lecture and dinner taking place on Saturday 19 September 2020 at the Maritime Museum in Liverpool so be sure to save the date.The Liverpool Tidal Institute (LTI) was founded at the University of Liverpool in 1919. This marked the start of Oceanography as an area of research and teaching at the University. It was the first Oceanography department in the UK and the world centre for knowledge of the tides.The LTI was renamed the Liverpool University Tidal Institute in 1961 and went through other name changes including the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory, after its first Director, until it became a component of the present National Oceanography Centre in 2010.To sign up for this event please register at Eventbrite.
