DESCRIPTION:‘…don’t forget the photos, it’s very important…’ The Nazi Persecution of Central German Sinti and Roma An exhibition marking the 75th anniversary of the destruction of the ‘Gypsy Camp’ in Auschwitz4th – 13th May 2019 at Liverpool CathedralStarting in the spring of 1943, thousands of German Sinti and Roma (‘Gypsies’) were deported to the death camp at Auschwitz. In August 1944, the special ‘Gypsy Camp’ that had been set up there was closed down and 2,900 inmates were sent to the gas chambers. An attempt to close the camp in May 1944 had failed because of the resistance of the inmates and 16th May is celebrated internationally as Romani Resistance Day. Some 20,000 Romanies died in Auschwitz and hundreds of thousands more fell victim to genocide all over Europe before 1945. This exhibition tells the story of nine German families, their suffering and survival.The exhibition is free and open daily, with the kind permission of the Dean and Chapter.The exhibition is a collaboration between the University of Liverpool and the Alternatives Jugendzentrum Dessau.
