SUMMARY:The ECA/ECR condition in the context of wellbeing and freedom (Dr Martin Gough)
DESCRIPTION:The current apparent crisis in mental health amongst early career academics and researchers, most acute amongst research students, is correlated with the zenith of the freedom to make intellectual choices and direct one’s own progress, in doctoral research the academic worker being yet to ‘progress’ into REF-strategy and TEF governed work. The seminar paper explores the phenomena at issue through the lenses of Jean-Paul Sartre’s account of anguish within his theory of freedom and of ‘emotional epistemology’.Refreshments will be available from 12.15pm and the seminar will start at 12.30pm. There will be time for discussion after the seminar for those who are able to stay.
