SUMMARY:Italy is Out Exhibition with Mario Badagliacca (19-26 October)
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be an Italian abroad today? The portraits in this exhibition feature Italians of different generations and background with their personal objects and every-day stories of human and cultural mobility. Exploring the historical and contemporary map of Italian migration and colonialism in Addis Abeba, New York, Buenos Aires, London and Tunis, these portraits challenge stereotypes on Italianness inside and outside Italy. “Italy is Out” is a project developed by the photographer Mario Badagliacca as Artist in Residence of the Research Project “Transnationalising Modern Languages: Mobility, Identity and Translation in Modern Italian Culture” (TML). The exhibition is hosted by Dr Barbara Spadaro, member of the TML Research Project team and Lecturer in Italian History and Cultures at UoL. The project and this exhibition are developed under the AHRC theme Translating Cultures.The exhibition will be open from 9am - 5pm, Monday - Friday.Mario Badagliacca is a Sicilian photographer and photojournalist. His work documents migration, life on the borders, human right violations and social issues, collaborating with non-profit organizations and academic institutions such as the Universities of Oxford, St. Andrews and San Diego State. His photographs have appeared in international newspapers and magazines, and on several book covers, receiving several international awards, including the Documentary Photography Audience Engagement Grant (New York 2014) and the 2017 ACEP Projecto Media exhibited at the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon. He is exhibited in international venues, including the Hopkins Hall Gallery in the USA.
