DESCRIPTION:Richard Blackett is Andrew Jackson Professor of History at Vanderbilt University. He is a historian of the abolitionist movement, particularly its transatlantic connections and the roles African Americans played in the movement to abolish slavery.He is the author of several books on slavery and abolition, including Divided Hearts. Britain and the American Civil War (2001) and Making Freedom: The Underground Railroad and the Politics of Slavery (2013). His latest book is the path-breaking The Captive's Quest for Freedom (2018), the first study to explore the impact fugitive slaves had on law and politics in the critical decade before the Civil War.
