SUMMARY:The science of safety: jet engines and nuclear reactors
DESCRIPTION:To maintain the highest safety standards, jet engines and nuclear reactors must have extremely low failure rates, despite having to operate in very demanding and complex environments. In this lecture, Rolls-Royce Senior Fellow for Materials, Dr David Rugg explores the exciting and experimental techniques that are providing the scientific understanding required to support safe design and operation. David Rugg FREng received his PhD in rapid solidification of magnesium alloys from Sheffield. He then went to IMI Titanium to work in the R+D group for a period of seven years prior to moving to Rolls-Royce where he has been for 20 years. He is currently the Rolls-Royce Senior Fellow for Materials which spans all materials and all business sectors. The role includes extensive interaction with universities and national labs. Dave has a passion for advanced experimental techniques including use of synchrotrons and X Ray lasers for industrial application and holds a visiting chair at Oxford.
