SUMMARY:Joint Book Launch: Michael Hopkins & William Ashworth
DESCRIPTION:Joint Book launch: William J. Ashworth, The Industrial Revolution: The State, Knowledge and Global Trade (Bloomsbury, 2017) Michael F. Hopkins, Dean Acheson and the Obligations of Power (Rowman & Littlefield, 2017) Featuring book talks by two distinguished faculty from the University of Liverpool’s History department, the book launch will be a chance to hear about the writing and research behind these two books as well as opportunities to ask the authors questions and for book signings. Ashworth questions some of the orthodoxies concerning the history of the industrial revolution and offers a deep and detailed reassessment of the subject that focuses on the State and its role in the development of key British manufactures. Hopkins’ book argues that Dean Acheson was slower to abandon the prospect of understandings with the Soviets and the communists in China than his memoirs claim, that his focus on the North Atlantic did not exclude his deep concern for Asian, and that the policy of containment was part of his wider belief that American power brought the obligation to promote a stable international order.
