SUMMARY:Business and modern slavery: Transparency and supply chains
DESCRIPTION:The speaker is Andrew Walllis OBE, founder and Chief Executive Officer of Unseen, a charity that was established to disrupt and challenge modern slavery and has helped lead the debate in the UK.  This event is part of ‘The Edge’ - IFB2016 (International Festival of Business) Official Fringe Festival. The seminar will be followed by networking with tea/coffee between 12.30 to 1.30pm.This event is presented by Liverpool’s Centre for the Study of International Slavery (CSIS), a collaboration between the University of Liverpool and the International Slavery Museum. The focus of the talk will be the UK’s Modern Slavery Act (2015) and the new requirements on businesses to report on what they are doing to eradicate slavery in their supply chains (the ‘Transparency in Supply Chains’ clause’). These came into force in 2016 and a number of businesses have already made statements while others are assessing the impact on business and on the problem of modern slavery.Aside from his work with Unseen, Andrew was Chairman of the Working Group for the Centre for Social Justice’s landmark report: ‘It Happens Here: Equipping the United Kingdom to fight modern slavery’ which gives a comprehensive road map for government, statutory authorities and business to eradicate slavery in the UK, acknowledged as the catalyst for the UK’s Modern Slavery BillThe event will be chaired by Dr Alex Balch and include Glynn Rankin as discussant. This event forms part of the CSIS seminar series. The CSIS has a number of members active in research regarding slavery and supply chains – historical and contemporary - and has produced guidance to help companies large and small to comply with the new requirements.
