DESCRIPTION:The Newstead Memorial Christmas LectureFractals: Journey to the 2.7th DimensionFractals are never-ending intricate mathematical patterns. Katie Steckles shows the beauty of fractals, exploring these intriguing structures and explaining why she finds them so fascinating. From constructing simple fractal shapes, to her worldwide MegaMenger project with stand-up mathematician Matt Parker, Katie demonstrates why fractals captured her mathematical imagination and why she finds magnificence in their infinity. The Newstead Memorial Christmas Lectures are held annually and honour our former President and Treasurer, Professor Peter Newstead, and his huge contributions to the Liverpool Mathematical Society. This lecture is face-to-face on the University of Liverpool's campus. There will not be a live stream or a recording.About the speakerDr Katie Steckles is a mathematician based in Manchester, who gives talks and workshops and writes about mathematics. She finished her PhD in 2011, and since then has talked about maths at universities, schools events, festivals, on BBC radio and TV, in books and on the internet.
