DESCRIPTION:Whether you're a space enthusiast, student, teacher, or just curious, you're invited to Asteroid Day 2025, a free public event happening at the University of Liverpool on Monday, June 30.This event is part of International Asteroid Day, an UN-recognised day held each year on June 30, to raise global awareness about asteroids, the risks they may pose to Earth and the importance of planetary defence.What to expect on the day:* 3pm A special live talk by Dr. Ashley King (Natural History Museum, London): “To Bennu and Back: The Geology of a Carbon-Rich Near-Earth Asteroid”*Insights into major space missions like DART, Hera, Hayabusa2, and the UKRI-funded REMORA project led by Dr. Stefania Soldini* Hands-on demos, space displays, and informal Q&A with scientists*A special screening of BBC Sky at Night: Asteroid Strike*Great opportunities to learn, connect, and explore the science behind near-Earth objects When: Monday, June 30, 2025 - morning session 10am - 12.30pm and afternoon session 1pm - 4pm, including 3pm special guest talk with Dr Ashley King, from the Natural History MuseumWhere: Walker lecture Theatre, Harrison Hughes BuildingCost: Free, though registration is required3pm Exclusive Guest talk and Live Session with Dr. Ashley King “To Bennu and Back: The Geology of a Carbon-Rich Near-Earth Asteroid”Dr. Ashley King is a Research Fellow at the Natural History Museum in London, where he investigates the origins of the Solar System and the formation of planets through laboratory analysis of meteorites and samples returned by space missions.   He is a member of the sample analysis teams for JAXA’s Hayabusa2 and NASA’s OSIRIS-REx missions. Additionally, he leads the UK Fireball Alliance (UKFAll), a national meteor camera network that recovers freshly fallen meteorites across the UK.In this talk, Dr. King will explore the geology of asteroid Bennu, share insights from the OSIRIS-REx mission, and highlight how sample-return science reveals the history of our Solar System.
