DESCRIPTION:Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to humanity and is one of the leading causes of death worldwide killing over 3,500 people every day. Without disruptive emerging technologies, we risk re-entering the medical dark ages, where infections that were once treatable, will kill again. Despite the sobering statistics, there is still hope that exists in nature. Can we reverse engineer nature’s best defence mechanisms and replicate these powerful antimicrobial strategies that have evolved over billions of year? This lecture will explore one laboratory’s journey of developing bioinspired antimicrobial engineering strategies based on nature’s grand design.*****This inaugural lecture is by Professor Raechelle D'S, from the School of Engineering.  Her area of research is Antimicrobial Materials for Biomedical and Industrial Applications.  Prof. D'Sa leads a research group interested in developing novel solutions to tackle biofilms and drug resistant infections. They are trying to tackle one of the biggest societal challenges that we will face: Antimicrobial Resistance and trying to find “engineering solutions” to this problem that need a multidisciplinary solution.
