SUMMARY:Social media: freedom of speech or a cesspit of filth, lies, and abuse?
DESCRIPTION:A talk by Dr Diana Maynard, Department of Computer Science - The University of SheffieldIn this talk, which is part of the School of EEEC's WiT lecture series, Dr. Maynard will discuss the use of social media as a means of social expression and information sharing, focusing particularly on the case of women journalists who have to counterbalance the importance of reporting on sensitive issues with the increasingly disturbing online abuse they frequently suffer, which may escalate to physical violence and even death. Several recent case studies will be highlighted, including Philippines journalist Maria Ressa, awarded the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, and Maltese investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was murdered in 2017.The talk will be followed by a Q&A session.
