Biography

Personal Statement

Gemma is a Population Geographer with research interests in internal migration, and ethnic residential segregation and mixing in Britain. In exploring these contemporary issues she has developed expertise in the analysis of individual and area level Census data, making use of longitudinal and advanced spatial methods.

After gaining her PhD in Geography at Queen’s University Belfast, Gemma was employed as a Research Associate at the Cathie Marsh Centre for Census and Survey Research (University of Manchester), as a Research Fellow on the Northern Ireland Longitudinal Study (Centre for Public Health, Queen’s University Belfast), and then as a Research Fellow at the School of Geography, Archaeology and Palaeoecology (Queen’s University Belfast).

From 2012 to 2014 Gemma held a prestigious Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship, to explore the ‘Geographies of ethnic and social segregation in England and Wales, 1991-2011'. She was appointed as Lecturer in Human Geography at the University of Liverpool in 2014, then as Senior Lecturer in 2017. She has been awarded research funding from the Leverhulme Trust, Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Economic and Social Research Council, British Academy, and the Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers.

Gemma's research has been used as evidence in government reviews, cited in numerous policy reports, and featured in the national and local press.
