Personal Statement
I previously taught at the University of Sheffield, where I completed my PhD in 2018 with a thesis entitled 'Writing Fighting: Critical Cognitive Approaches to the Language of Killing in War'. My research primarily focuses on cognitive approaches to language, through which lens I study a range of topics, including the rhetoric of drone warfare, the relationship between lyrics and music in the meanings of songs, and the way readers model the beliefs of characters in discourse. My present work focuses on the role of agency in both language and society, and the challenges and issues that arise when these two concepts are conflated. I presently teach courses in sociolinguistics and stylistics, and I enjoy bringing my research methods and interests into the classroom where possible.
