Courses with XJTLU

Founded in 2006, Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University (XJTLU) is the largest international joint venture university in China, and is a partnership between Xi'an Jiaotong University and the University of Liverpool.

The English Language Centre at the University of Liverpool, in partnership with the Institute of Leadership and Education Advanced Development (ILEAD) at XJTLU is pleased to be able to offer two-part Teacher Development courses for your group of university or college teachers focused on Teaching English for Academic Purpose (TEAP) or Teaching with English as a Medium of Instruction (TEMI).

Our TEAP courses are for teachers who are teaching English for academic purposes (EAP) at university or college; for teachers who are planning to become EAP teachers; and for English language teachers looking to improve their expertise and teaching skills.

Our TEMI courses are for academics and teachers at universities and colleges who are teaching their subjects in English or using bilingual methods.  They might be teaching Chinese or international students, and at different levels of the curriculum.  We have trained teachers of subjects such as medicine, chemistry, college English, literature, engineering and history.  We recognise that our trainees are the experts in their fields and our courses are dedicated to transforming and modernising classroom practice; considering how to select and create the best teaching and learning materials; discussing the latest educational theories; and giving students the very best learning experiences.

Examples of what we can offer your teachers are:

  • A 4-day TEMI or TEAP course in Suzhou at XJTLU, followed by 2+ weeks at the University of Liverpool. These two training courses can take place at different times in the year, to suit your needs.
  • 2+ weeks at the University of Liverpool, with a follow-up at your own institution, in China, undertaken by XJTLU. This would comprise a review of the training and ideas studied in Liverpool; classroom visits to help your teachers reflect upon their teaching and professional practice and how it has changed and improved; and to plan your teachers’ future professional development. This is recommended to take place 4-10 months after your Liverpool course.

Every course we run is tailor-designed to meet your managerial goals, fulfil your teachers’ professional needs and reach your institutions’ teaching targets, thus giving your students the best possible learning experience.  We focus on 21st century teaching methods, skills and technologies, and the latest educational theories; our practice is student-centred and trainee-centred throughout.  Our professional teacher trainers at the University of Liverpool and Xi’an-Jiaotong Liverpool University train hundreds of teachers every year from across the world.  We run trainee-centred workshops to help teachers gain more confidence and pride in their teaching, understand the importance of English as an international language, and offer their students the best and most up-to-date learning experiences.  Our training courses are transformative experiences that can have a lasting impact on teachers’ careers.
