Entry Requirements

Our entry requirements are different for our different courses.

If you want to study in our Activate English classes, you will need to have a level of English that is at least in the A2 band of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).  What does this mean? It means that you are not a beginner.  You have studied English for around 200 hours with a teacher.  Most “Elementary” classes are similar to A2.

We also run an IELTS course.  Some students only study IELTS with us.  They come only in the afternoon.  Sometimes students study Activate English in the morning and IELTS in the afternoon.  If you want to study on our IELTS course, you must have a higher level of English.  You will need to have a level of English that is at least in the A2+ band of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).  What does this mean?  It means that you have studied English for around 300 hours with a teacher.  Most “Pre-Intermediate” classes are similar to A2+.

It is also possible to study General English in the morning and English for Business in the afternoon. For this you must have a level of English that is at least in the B1 band of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

We do not usually have beginners’ classes on Activate English.  However, sometimes we do.  If you are a beginner and you want to study with us, please contact us and we will tell you if we can help you.

If you do not have a certificate to show your level of English, we can send you an online test to see if your level is suitable for our Activate course.  All you need to do is to tick the box asking for the test on your application form.

If you do have a certificate to show your level of English, please upload it with your application and we will tell you whether it is acceptable.  If we cannot accept it, we will send you a short online test to do instead.

Activate English is not suitable for students under 17 years old.  If you are under 18 years old please see important information on the Under 18s webpage.
