Dynamics, Control and Aeroelasticity group

This world-renowned group specialises in understanding and managing the dynamical behaviour of structures and machines. Fields of interest span measurement, modelling, system identification, active control, moving-load problems, inverse problems and nonlinearity.

We are addressing some of the toughest problems in engineering dynamics today and work with an exciting roster of R&D partners, including US Air Force (EOARD) Agusta-Westland Helicopters, Airbus UK, Rolls-Royce, Jaguar, Land Rover, Ford, Fiat, PSA Peugeot-Citroen and BMW.

Our participation in the Institute for Risk & Uncertainty is taking us into the unknown. We are creating probabilistic, interval and fuzzy methods for understanding uncertainties in structural dynamics and Aeroelasticity, as well as stochastic techniques that account for variables such as manufacturing tolerances, wear and degradation.

Dynamics and Control Laboratory facilities

The Dynamics and Control Laboratory is equipped with 3 LMS TestLab systems capable of modal testing with more than 60 measurement channels.

Large scale model updating has been carried out and we have the complete QinetiQ Lynx helicopter.

Predictive structural modification of Pegasus casings based on measured vibration data was completed for Rolls Royce.

Specialist rigs for automotive brake-squeal testing and moving-load problems are available.

IC Engines Laboratory facilities

The IC Engines Laboratory includes a rolling-road facility and transient engine dynamometers with rapid control prototyping for performance testing of robust nonlinear control of automotive engines and powertrains.

A single cylinder Ford BOSS test engine is equipped for laser ignition studies.

The WAVE-RT software system is available for high fidelity high-speed engine simulation. It includes a rolling-road facility and transient engine dynamometers with rapid control prototyping for performance testing of robust nonlinear control of automotive engines and powertrains.
