Athena Swan Charter
The School of Engineering achieved the Athena Swan Bronze Award in 2014 and is continuing to develop the Athena Swan initiative, building on our successes and engagement with staff as we strive towards Silver level.
The Athena initiative is supported at the highest levels of the Faculty, with the developments and actions led by senior staff and designed for female members of staff in relation to transparency of information for career progression, appraisal, equal opportunities, networking, mentoring and work-life balance.
The Athena SWAN principles also play a significant part in the Faculty’s contribution to ‘Achieving Institutional Excellence’ (AEI), which is intended to engage staff at all levels in innovating and improving the way the institution functions.
Promoting Career Opportunities for Women
The Athena SWAN Charter recognises and celebrates good employment practice for women working in science, technology, engineering and medicine (STEM) in higher education and research.
The Athena SWAN Charter was launched in 2005 with three core beliefs:
- The advancement of science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine is fundamental to quality of life across the globe.
- It is vitally important that women are adequately represented in what has traditionally been, and is still, a male-dominated area.
- Science cannot reach its full potential unless it can benefit from the talents of the whole population, and until women and men can benefit equally from the opportunities it affords.
School Self-Assessment Team (SAT)
An Athena SWAN networking group has been established in the School of Engineering with the intention of organising talks, social events and other networking activities (for all members of the school). The School of Engineering is committed to further improving the work environment to suite all its staff and will be hoping to build upon the bronze success by applying for the Silver Award in 2017.
