Department of Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering

The Department is formed following the recent restructuring of the three centres of the School, Centre for Engineering Dynamics, Centre for Engineering Sustainability and Centre for Materials and Structures. There are currently 38 academic staff responsible for the teaching and supervision of about 700 undergraduate, 50 postgraduate taught and 80 postgraduate research students. The Department offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in Aerospace Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

The research in the Department spans in many engineering disciplines and specialises in fields such as aerodynamics, flight dynamics and simulation, experimental and computational fluid dynamics, experimental mechanics, structural and functional materials, laser and additive manufacturing, biomaterials and biomechanics, and nuclear engineering. The School has scored highly in the national Research Excellence Framework (REF).
