Homelessness, Cancer and Old Age: A Storytelling Workshop

Wednesday 13th June 2018, 11.30am-1.30pm

Venue: Waterhouse Building, Department of Health Services Research, University of Liverpool, L69 3GL

You are cordially invited to participate in an interactive workshop on the theme of homelessness, cancer and old age at the University of Liverpool.

The starting point for the workshop is the recognition that the relationship between homelessness, cancer and old age has been overlooked both in research and practice terms. The workshop aims to bridge this gap in understanding by bringing together academics, practitioners, commissioners and service users interested in researching and/or addressing the provision of cancer care services for older homeless people, and people interested in preventing older cancer patients from becoming homeless.

The workshop will draw explicitly on the story circle method- a turn-taking procedure in which small groups are invited to respond to a trigger statement with short stories. At its simplest, story circles involve an exchange of stories with people in a more relational way.

Participants may gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of living with and treating cancer among older homeless people. In particular, the ways in which, for older people, homelessness may increase the risk of developing cancer, create barriers to diagnosis, treatment, discharge from hospital, and impact on wellbeing and survival from cancer.

The workshop is aimed at facilitating participants to identify research projects to develop and test interventions to reduce the burden of cancer among people affected by homelessness and housing need.
