Lecturer in Algorithmic Optimisation/Data Science/Machine Learning - Grade 8 (2 Posts) Job Reference: 036248

We seek to appoint 2 highly motivated, research-focused individuals as Lecturers in Algorithmic Optimisation/Data Science/Machine Learning in the Department of Computer Science, University of Liverpool. The successful candidates will undertake research of international standard and contribute to teaching modules and supervision of student projects in the department at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The appointments will be based on the proven research track record or industrial experience of the candidates. We value both theoretical, applied, and interdisciplinary research and research leading to economic and social impact outside academia. We are particularly interested in applicants with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Optimisation algorithms, including integer programming and combinatorial optimisation.
  • Leveraging machine learning for optimisation and search, including deep learning and reinforcement learning for discrete and continuous optimisation.
  • Bayesian optimisation for experimental design, trade-offs between exploitation and exploration.
  • Machine learning for materials data: Feature engineering and data analytics, data science for solid crystalline materials, novel types of data with symmetries, materials fingerprints, geometric deep learning, and generative modelling.
  • Computational geometry, periodic geometry and topology, computational group theory.

 

Lecturer in High-Performance / Quantum Computing - Grade 8 (2 Posts) Job Reference: 036249

Following our recent investment in the area, we seek to appoint 2 highly motivated, research-focused individuals as Lecturers in High-Performance Computing (HPC) or Quantum Computing in the Department of Computer Science, University of Liverpool. The successful candidates will undertake research of international standard and contribute to teaching modules and supervision of student projects related to HPC in the Department of Computer Science at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The appointments will be based on the proven research track record or industrial experience of the candidates. We value theoretical, applied, and interdisciplinary research in High-Performance Computing, broadly construed, from traditional HPC to cloud and quantum computing, and applications of High-Performance Computing leading to economic and social impact outside academia.

We are particularly interested in applicants with experience in one or more of the following areas: Distributed computing; Energy efficient computing; Extreme-scale computing; Middleware design and development; Domain-specific language design; Scalable algorithms, programming models, tools and techniques that exploit the specifics of existing and emerging hardware (e.g. GPUs, TPUs, Cloud, Quantum), including applications to large-scale machine learning.

 

Lecturer in Natural Language Processing and Information Retrieval - Grade 8 (2 Posts) Job Reference: 036251

We seek to appoint up to 2 highly motivated, research-focused individuals as Lecturers in Natural Language Processing (NLP) or Information Retrieval (IR) in the Machine Learning Group at the Department of Computer Science, University of Liverpool.

The successful candidates will conduct world-leading research in NLP and IR, and contribute to the teaching of modules and supervision of student projects related to their fields of expertise in the Department of Computer Science at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The appointments will be based on the proven research track record or industrial experience of the candidates.

We value theoretical, applied, and interdisciplinary research in NLP/IR, covering all aspects of NLP/IR including but not limited to: lexical and semantic composition, syntactic and semantic parsing, named-entity recognition, representation learning, relation extraction, information extraction, sentiment and emotion analysis, argument mining, computational social sciences, ethics and responsible NLP, interpretability, phonology, summarisation, machine translation, voice enabled devices, online chatbots, machine learning for NLP, and question answering.

We welcome applications from outside academia including those who would like to move to academic positions on a part-time basis while continuing working in the industry. We value both fundamental research in NLP/IR demonstrated by publications in top venues as well as research leading to industrial or social impact outside academia. Researchers with an excellent track record in other relevant areas will also be considered.
