Congratulations to Dr Maggie Williams, one of the finalists for “Volunteer of the Year” at the University of Liverpool Staff Awards 2016*.

As a volunteer University Teacher in the Department of Earth, Ocean and Ecological Sciences, Maggie was nominated for many reasons, but especially for her contribution, enthusiasm, knowledge and delivery of outreach in conjunction with the Central Teaching Labs at Liverpool and across the national geoscience community.

Maggie is not only an inspiration to staff, visitors and students, but her extensive knowledge and experience with teaching A-level geology and her involvement with national Earth Science organisations means her training and outreach sessions are constantly in demand.

An enthusiastic supporter of outreach, Maggie works collaboratively with many University of Liverpool sectors to promote Earth Sciences and deliver activities to all age groups. These include Dangerous Science, Ness Gardens Family Science Days, STEM masterclasses, Earthquake Day, work experience training and national schools events.

Maggie leads the annual, research-driven A-level geology teacher training events at Liverpool, attracting teachers from across the country. Encompassing her expertise, enthusiasm and professionalism, Maggie has a highly respected national reputation for developing geology teaching skills. Maggie’s holistic approach includes mentoring new geology teachers, developing their knowledge and confidence on fieldwork and helping with resource development for delivering practical sessions for their students.

Maggie is highly respected in the department by all staff and students, with whom she works closely as part of the first year practical demonstration classes and field classes, including developing online exercises in field skills and safety training.

We are truly fortunate that she is part of the University of Liverpool.

*In December, colleagues from across the University of Liverpool were recognised at the Staff Awards 2016 ceremony at the Liverpool Guild of Students. Although Maggie did not win the award for “Volunteer of the Year 2016” we are extremely proud that she was a finalist in a very strong field of candidates and from over 300 Staff from across the University of Liverpool.
