Online Inaugural Lecture by Professor Mick Follows, Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences, MIT, USA, to celebrate 100 years of Ocean Studies.

"What controls the elemental composition of surface ocean particulate?" The elemental composition of sinking particulate modulates the efficiency of carbon storage in the ocean. We model the relationship of macromolecular and elemental composition in phytoplankton and interpret observations of the composition of surface particulate along a transect in the North Pacific. We infer that acclimation of the primary producers to local environmental conditions exerts a significant control on the elemental composition of particulate.
