Professor Luke Dawson

I am the Director of Undergraduate Education, responsible for ensuring the curriculum is fit for purpose and produces graduates of the highest calibre.

Where did you study your undergraduate degree?
I undertook both my undergraduate degrees here at Liverpool

What was your first job after graduating?
General Duties House Officer and Part Time General Dental Practice

Briefly describe your career progression from that first job to your current role.
Started off as a House Officer, and as a result of holding another degree did some research and was then given a lectureship. From there gained my PhD, and moved through Senior lecture and now Professor.

What do you find most rewarding about working in dentistry?
For me it is teaching the next generation of dentists

What aspects of dentistry do you find most interesting?
Education, and getting people out of pain

What are the three most important qualities to have in dentistry?
Honesty, Rigorous-self-appraisal and determination, the ability to accept feedback and make change

Where do you think dentistry will be in 10 years?
I hope there is an integrated strategy for genuine life long learning and skills integration for the benefit of holistic patient care

What advice would you give to students applying for dentistry.
Be honest with yourself why you want to do. It is not a job but a life choice and its a hard but rewarding one.
