Dean of the School of Dentistry

I commenced my appointment as Dean in 2018 having moved to Liverpool from the University of Glasgow where I had worked for 18 years. At Glasgow I was initially a Senior Lecturer and, from 2011, a Professor in Restorative Dentistry and Dental Education. I served as Director of Dental Education for 11 years and then as Deputy Head of School. I was then, and I am still, an Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry and maintain an active clinical practice focussed on Periodontology.

My role as Dean is to lead a talented group of staff in delivering a world-class, research-connected, learning experience to our students. We aim to work in close partnership with students so that they are involved in new developments from inception to implementation. The ultimate aim, of course, is to produce highly skilled dental professionals able to serve the communities in which they work. Dentistry is still fundamentally about preventing and alleviating suffering, and improving the quality of life for individuals and communities, through the application of professional knowledge and skill in a caring and ethical manner. It is the profession I joined just over 30 years ago and from which I still gain enormous satisfaction.
